homework
March 1st, 2006So… I’ve been doing a lot of writing papers and stats homework this semester. I just wanted to say that…
… wait for it …
… here it comes …
LaTeX is neat.
… yes! …
Here you'll find updates on big events in my life as well as photos, a calendar, and my resume.

I headed to Anderson Village this morning to tour an apartment since I’ll need to find something for my last year here. I decided, a while back, that I would be leaving the house I’m in now once Andy graduated. I don’t really know any of the other guys here that well, and we’re not like-minded on most things — it’s probably best for all (for my stress level, at least) if I move along.
My impression after touring the apartment: the apartment itself was “ok”. The carpet wasn’t in great shape, and it wasn’t super nice. But it did have lots of closet space, and more-than-enough space for a single guy in the kitchen. The greatest thing of all — it’s a 90 second walk to work from the apartment.
Anyway, I’m filling out the application tonight, and I’ll probably turn it in tomorrow and see what they say. I’m too lazy to shop around — hopefully this won’t be a mistake. ![]()
Some Garmin folks were in town for an information session at KSU tonight, and they took interns and new-hires for May out for dinner afterwards. After waiting for what seemed like forever (dinner was at 8:30, and I forgot to eat lunch), we were all ready to eat at 4 Olives. First, the food was excellent. More importantly though, I had a great time talking with RJ, Karen, and Ally (all interns-to-be) and Scott (the brave Garmin associate that came to the lone empty chair on our side of the table). I was also able to talk to Shelly face-to-face after we’d played a short game of “phone tag” today. It’s amazing how much more productive you can be in 30 seconds of interaction than in 10 minutes of leaving messages back and forth.
I also found out that I’ll probably be on the marine plotters team over the summer. Sweetness.
Though, I have to say that both the marine and auto equipment I got to look at was pretty sweet, and I think either position would have been great. It’s still nice knowing what the future has in store.
Two Garmin posts in a row. Either my life is boring, or Garmin rocks. I’m not willing to admit that my life is boring, so Garmin must rock. ![]()
It looks like I’ll be interning in Olathe, KS at Garmin International for the summer. Hurray!
It’s not been determined which department and team I’ll be working on yet, but I should be starting the week after school gets out. ![]()
I feel the need to write something about CIS 308 and the experience that I’ve had with it over the past few months. The trouble is, I don’t really know how to say what I want without sounding arrogant, condescending, or resentful…. go figure.

I noticed this quote on my google home page this evening, and it is soooo true:
It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.

Another semester under the belt… wheeeeee. Rinse and repeat in the spring.
I just got off the phone from leaving a voice message for my HR contact at Jacobs. This call was to say, “Have a great life, you took too long.” since I’ll be leaving town for a week and a half, starting this weekend. As it turns out, the position that was scrounged up wouldn’t have been all that interesting anyway. If I want uninteresting I can stay in Manhattan and work for the CIS department while making progress towards my degree. This should also prevent me from possibly being forced into staying through Fall 2007 — that is a good thing.
Next up, snowboarding in WP — oh yeah!
Alright! Progress! After waiting a week since my last email (no reply), I sent another email to Jacobs today inquiring about cooping there next semester. This time I received a prompt reply. It appears that they found a project for a CS major, but the wording of the email is a little scary, so I’m going to wait for more information on the project before I start jumping for joy and commiting to moving to Houston. Anyway, she said they’d be overnighting me a “package” tomorrow for arrival on Friday. Hopefully I can get it taken care of before I leave for a week to snowboard…
On a side note, I had to email my resume again (3rd time) and my number of credit hours (2nd time) to her. This is getting kind of old; shouldn’t they have somewhere to store this information?
The last day or two have been riddled with a large amount of attempted comment spam to my blog. Since I have everything run through a moderation queue, it hasn’t affected the content on my site at all, but it has resulted in needing to clear out the queue several times a day.
I’ve just installed the Akismet plugin to help combat the problem. Here’s to hoping it does a great job…
