It looks like it’s been a while since I’ve written I felt the need to update, but at the same time there’s nothing really newsworthy and exciting to report.
I’ve been making some awesome progress this week at work. I’ve been wanting to replace our current BSD firewall with a linux box for quite a while now. BSD has produced two servers that lock up after a couple weeks and need rebooted before you can access them. Normally I’d have blamed this on the hardware, but it happened on two completey diferrent sets of hardware (except for the network cards) so I find that hard to believe. I was able to rummage up an old box and a couple of 100MB network cards to test a bridging firewall in linux, and the results have been better than I’d hoped for. Configuration only took a few minutes, and everything worked as expected after that.
I’ve also been toying with installing Gentoo on an old Sunblade 1000 that we had at work. Our DHCP and monitoring hosts are both running on old hardware, and I’d like to see those services moved over to somewhere else before school starts. Right now I’d be comfortable installing either (or both) of those services on the good ol’ blade. I’ve been really impressed with the easy time that I had installing Gentoo on it. Way to go, guys.
K-Slug might be coming back…
Ben and Mandy get married this weekend. I’m excited for that to happen, and in a lot of ways for it to just be over. I realize that I only get a tiny bit of the “full experience” being Ben’s best man, but just trying to schedule a bachelor party and little things has been a nightmare. The night before the bachelor party I got a phone call about possibly changing the time so that we could do something with all the bridesmaids too… ummm… too late for something like that! Then I was planning on heading back into Hays tonight to hang out with Ben and he was spending the night with me, but Mandy changed his plans so that he’d be out of town. If they were out of town I didn’t have any reason to go that early so I’m staying in Manhattan for the night……….. then a little while ago I get a call that they’re back in Hays and get called a dork for not being there… what the..
I’ve decided that all girls are mental cases.
Oh well, now that I’m in Manhattan for the night I might be able to receive a shipment from UPS before I leave town (still not sure when I’m leaving). I think the rest of my roommates might be out of town, and it’d suck to have it sitting outside waiting to get stolen all weekend. If it’s not here by the time I leave I’ll probably talk my brother into coming by to get it later in the day or something. Lucky him.
Still have a toast to write. At least a rough draft is on the agenda for tonight.
